Over the weekend the Girls and Boys basketball teams showed some great strides early in the season when they took on Mitchell on the road and Alliance at home. Let’s start on the girl’s side of things. The Gering Girls would be taking on a very good state rated Mitchell team. The bulldogs would fight hard in a low scoring affair against the Tigers but ultimately Mitchell would come away with the win 42-40. Jenna Balthazor and Paige Lopez would lead the Bulldogs in scoring on the night both leading the team with 11 points each. Kelly Snelling would also tallie 7 more points. On the boys side of things on thursday against Mitchell the Bulldogs fell just short with another heartbreaking loss. Despite holding a double digit lead in the 4th quarter the bulldogs were unable to finish the game as the Tigers came storming back finishing the game on a 27-13 run to pull out a 3 point victory at home by a score of 79-76. Both Bulldog teams would have little time to hang their heads over there loss as they were back in action the next night at home taking on Alliance. The Gering Girls responded well to the close loss in Mitchell just one night prior by defeating rival Alliance by a score of 68-55 pushing the girls record to 3-2 early on in the season and the 2nd win of the year over Alliance. The Gering boys would put together a nice performance in the 2nd game of the double header but would eventually fall to the talented Alliance boys by a final score of 59-49 but the game overall was much tighter free throws down the stretch helped Alliance pull away. Both the girls and the boys Basketball teams next game will be this upcoming saturday as they head up to Chadron to take on the Cardinals.
