The Gering volleyball team seniors had their last game on their home court this last Thursday night as they would take on Bridgeport in a battle of the Bulldogs. Gering would get off to a rough start in this contest however, as Bridgeport would take the first 2 sets by the scores of 20-25 and 22-25. Although Gering trailed by 2 sets, they would dig deep and find a way to win the next two sets 25-23, 25-23 and would eventually cap the amazing rally with a 15-12, 5th set win. Zoee Smith set a school record for digs in this match with 37 digs. Olivia Schaub would also put together a nice performance by collecting 20 kills for her 2nd straight match. The match was very tense throughout the first 2 sets when Bridgeport was making their run on Gering, any hope of making a trip to the state tournament surely would have been washed away with a loss to Bridgeport, but the Bulldogs were able to dig down deep and grind the next 3 sets to finish out the match in 5 sets. Senior, Jenna Balthazor was very pleased with how the team performed, “I am very proud of how my team played. We had been working very hard preparing for this night. It was very special to be able to win on a night like this,” Balthazor said. Along with Balthazor was senior Arianna Mitchell, this was her first game back on the court for medical reasons. “It felt really good to be back, I am very happy with how everything went and that my first game back was a win. I am excited to see what we will be able to do in our upcoming games,” Mitchell said. The bulldogs will look to finish the season out strong against a tough ogallala team. They will then look ahead to the sub-district tournament where their first round matchup will be Sidney, a team the Bulldogs split the season series with at 1-1. If the Bulldogs beat Sidney they will then look to win the sub-district championship for the 2nd straight year and continue their season.
