The Gering varsity volleyball team took fifth place at the Western Conference Tournament on October 6th.

Gering lost to Alliance at first, 2-0, and then to Chadron, 2-1 but Gering pushed through and claimed a victory in the fifth-place match against Scottsbluff, with a 2-1 score. This brings the Gering win-loss ratio to 14 – 14. Despite this rough day, the Gering varsity team plans to come back as strong as ever during their next game. They are determined to win.

“I absolutely love the kids that I work with,” says coach Cochran. “They are hard working and blue-collar kids that give their absolute best every day.” The team believes that Cochran is a great coach. She’s had experience and has previously coached a team that won state. Cochran definitely knows what she is doing, and is always positive and encouraging, which helps the team perform at the best of its ability.

“We’re going to take it one day at a time,” she says when asked about the upcoming District games, “We need to prepare for each game individually. We look one game at a time.” Sub-districts will take place on October 30th, and districts will follow soon after.

Varsity player Jenna Balthazar says, “We’re off to a pretty good start considering the teams we’ve played in tournaments previously. This was just a bad weekend for us.” There are a lot of younger players on the team that doesn’t have any varsity experience prior to this season. There were two starters who had previously played varsity, but all five other players haven’t ever been on a varsity court before. Jenna has no doubt that after the upcoming tournament this weekend, and the one on Thursday against Scottsbluff, Gering will reclaim its state rank.
