Thanksgiving is around the corner, and on this holiday, we eat, we watch football, we cook and we spend time around our family and friends. Thanksgiving is a very eventful holiday and everyone loves it.
Although, there is one really important part, in my opinion, of Thanksgiving that we fail to remember even though it is in the name.
It’s just that simple prefix of the word that gives the whole holiday one true meaning.
The phrase “thank you” is a phrase we forget to say quite often. Another thing we even forget is showing what we’re thankful for; showing gratitude towards things we take granted for.
Simplistically, we see what we don’t have. We want that brand new and expensive shirt, or we want a designer handbag, for example. Because of that, we look at what we don’t have and think that we aren’t very fortunate, because we can’t have that item.
Instead, we should look at what we do have, but in more detail. We do have more than most people, in fact. I understand some are not as fortunate and those people don’t have the best lives, but the one thing everyone currently has on this Earth is a life.
As cliché as it sounds, we’re alive, which is one of the best – bit most fragile – gifts we’re ever given.
I myself have noticed that most people aren’t as grateful for the life that they live, but the result of it is because people aren’t living their best life. People are being negative and they aren’t seeing the positives to everyday life, whereas we should all just be thankful that everyday is a new day.
A new day means new chances.
You get a multitude of 24 hour cycles, in which you get the opportunity to do what you want, every single cycle, or day.
Gautama Buddha, the founder of Buddhism, once said, “Each morning we are born again. What we do today matters most.”
Thanksgiving is just one good and perfect example that gives us a simple reminder to think of what we have and what we’re thankful for.
So everyday, holiday or not, try to show thankfulness in life. It can be just as simple as telling your friends and family directly that you are grateful for them. Write a list of things that you have in your life that you are thankful for.
By doing these small gestures, a more positive outlook on life is possible.
